Owner and lead decorator, Jen Atkinson, draws design inspiration from her years of traveling around the world. She’s lived in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and America. From an early age, much to her parents’ frustration, Jen would constantly rearrange the furniture in her bedroom to give it a “fresh look” and as a teenager she would redecorate her family’s home on an almost monthly basis. Years later, she would find herself redecorating the homes of friends and dabbling in custom furniture making. After a successful 16-year career as an international TV news journalist, Jen finally decided to turn her decorating passion into a full time job, and Clear Concept Design was born.
Jen’s decorating ethos is that things are only truly beautiful if they are also functional. She also believes that beautiful does not necessarily mean expensive.
In her spare time Jen teaches yoga and in 2017 she founded the non-profit organization Making Mats Matter which turns old yoga mats into sleeping mats for homeless communities across the NYC/NJ region. Jen is fluent in English, Italian and Afrikaans and can make small talk about animals and the weather in French, Hebrew and Arabic.
She and her husband reside in Hoboken, New Jersey, where they are raising their three children.
